Onshore wind energy combating rural depopulation (Muras/Spain)

Onshore wind energy combating rural depopulation: In May 2021, the Spanish Wind Energy Association awarded the Eolo Prize for Rural Wind Integration to the municipality of Muras (Lugo), for being a model region in wind energy development.

The implementation of wind energy began 20 years ago and has had a great positive impact on the municipality. It has contributed to combating rural depopulation, what is known as “empty Spain”, the socio-economic development of the area, the on-site consumption of the energy produced, as well as demonstrating that this type of project is fully compatible with the rest of the activities in the surrounding area.
