CAN Europe and Green10 meet with President von der Leyen
On 11 July, CAN Europe and the other Green10 — a coalition of ten of the largest European environmental and climate civil society networks — had the opportunity to meet with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. This meeting was of the utmost importance for continued and enhanced climate action, and also for protecting civil society across Europe and beyond.
We delivered a clear and urgent message: civil society must be safeguarded and supported. In light of the mounting pressure faced by the climate movement and the growing threat to democratic spaces, we urged President von der Leyen to publicly defend civil society, recognise its role, value it, and ensure it receives public funding.
We reminded the President that civil society plays a vital part in fostering widespread, long-lasting public support for the ambitious climate and energy policies the planet urgently requires.
We urgently called on her to maintain her commitment to the European Green Deal and resist the growing push for deregulation fuelled by disinformation, anti-democratic rhetoric and narrow corporate interests.
