Government policies on the phasing out of coal

Although there are around 280 coal power plants and dozens of coal mines in operation in the EU, the end of coal is inescapable. Some countries in Europe are now pushing for a complete phase-out of coal over the next one to two decades. Others are restricting the use of the fuel.

At the EU level, the outlook on coal is also getting bleaker by introducing tougher European regulations, especially on air pollution.
