Energy Monitor Op-ed: CEE countries must not spend EU money to finance natural gas in district heating

In spite of EU climate goals and soaring gas prices, an EU Modernisation Fund for energy systems has spent €167m over the past year to potentially convert coal-fired heat and power plants to gas.

Burning gas is problematic from climate, energy security, sustainability and health perspectives. Some member states argue that there are no alternatives to provide heat to district heating networks in the short term; we would question how hard they have looked for these alternatives.
