The 2019–2024 European Commission has been one of the most ambitious on climate and social policies. However, these policies have been disconnected from each other, and from economic policies.

The EU is undergoing the biggest transformation since its foundation. This necessitates a new approach from the European Commission that aligns social, climate & environmental and economic policies. For lasting change that fosters social cohesion, a competitive Europe and strengthens the green transition, Europe needs a new Executive Vice President for Wellbeing & Future Generations.

The 2024–2029 mandate must propose a concrete pathway for how we transition to carbon neutrality and a circular economy while achieving social progress and building a resilient and prosperous Europe. Such a tangible pathway should be reflected in the EU priorities.

The 2019–2024 European Commission has been one of the most ambitious on climate policies. The European Green Deal has been a landmark milestone in transforming Europe into a low-carbon economy, but it has lacked a strong social dimension.

Ambitious climate policies must continue as climate change is already deepening socio-economic and gender inequality, and affecting the economy and public finances. The 2024 – 2029 mandate must deliver on a Green & Social Deal, to harness the social benefits of the transition towards climate neutrality and a circular economy, while actively identifying and mitigating potential adverse social consequences – and maximising positive social synergies. This Deal should promote a socially just, prosperous, and resilient Europe, that respects planetary boundaries.

The European Parliament has set the tone for ambitious climate and social policies. In setting up and delivering the European Green Deal the Parliament has consistently supported bold climate targets and policies to decarbonise our economy. Regarding social policies, the European Parliament is a key ally in the delivery of the European Pillar of Social Rights, and has fought for ambitious policies and legislation on social protection systems, quality employment and social investments. As we look to the start of a new mandate it’s important to position and frame the Just Transition as a priority to go beyond leaving no one behind, but empower people to thrive as Europe undergoes the green transition.

Letter to the EU Heads of States and Governments: The Clean Industrial Deal & Competitiveness

We are writing ahead of the European Council 17-18 October meeting, in which the EU’s competitiveness agenda will be discussed.
In light of the forthcoming ‘Clean Industrial Deal’ (CID), the best way to preserve the EU’s long-term competitiveness is an EU green industrial strategy centred around the European Green Deal and its targets, which stimulates the production of net-zero technologies, ends our fossil fuel dependence and reduces our energy and material demand.
