Briefing: How the European Semester could further energy democracy in the EU

Energy communities are a democratic solution to our energy, poverty and social problems for the coming decades. The can set the foundation for Europe to rapidly wean of fossil fuels and acclerate the renewable energy transition. While the amount of energy communities within Europe is growing, the rate is too slow due to political, economic and social barriers.

The European Semester process is a great opportunity to acclerate the growth of energy communities within Europe, as it focuses on economic and social policy coordination aligns with the social benefits of energy communities’ market activities. CAN Europe and REScoop.eu are calling for the further integration and mainstreaming of energy communities in the Semester process.
