Ohrid, 1–3 September 2025 – From 1 to 3 September 2025, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe organised the second session of the Training for Journalists on Climate Disinformation in the Western Balkans, bringing together over 10 journalists from across the region in Ohrid, North Macedonia.
This year’s session, titled “Climate Ambition Ten Years after the Paris Agreement and towards COP30,” focused on strengthening journalists’ capacities to identify and counter climate disinformation, while also deepening their understanding of regional and global climate policy processes.
The training provided participants with the opportunity to explore effective approaches to responsible and impactful environmental reporting, gain a clearer understanding of COP processes and negotiations and their relevance for the region, as well as learn best practices for reporting on the upcoming COP30. It also created space for exchanging experiences and building a regional network of journalists committed to high-quality climate reporting.
“This year’s COP and the new NDCs cycle are a critical moment when countries need to present their plans up to 2035, and keep the 1.5 temperature goal within reach. For the region, these plans should also include a just transition pathway and ensure climate finance access. Journalists need clear guidance to report accurately on these developments and government commitments. Proper coverage will ensure participation, strengthen accountability, and accelerate the region’s climate ambitions,” says Frosina Antonovska, Climate and Energy Policy Coordinator, CAN Europe.

“Supporting journalists is essential for accurate and impactful climate reporting. Well-informed media not only keep the public aware but also strengthen accountability, encourage informed debate, and contribute to meaningful climate action in the region,” adds Eleonora Allena, Communication Coordinator for the Western Balkans, CAN Europe.
Through interactive sessions led by climate experts, communication professionals, and media trainers, the programme combined policy content with practical skills, ensuring that participants left better equipped to cover climate and energy issues with accuracy and impact.
The training is part of CAN Europe’s ongoing efforts to support independent journalism in the Western Balkans, strengthen climate literacy in the media, and build resilience against disinformation that undermines climate action.
