CAN Europe has submitted two responses to public consultations on the Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) 2026 Scenarios that aim at providing a basis to develop a European energy infrastructure that is fit for purpose.
These Scenarios should be built in line with European Union policy targets, reflect the latest updated national energy and climate plans (NECPs), national and EU policies and taking into account the latest available data. The Central Scenario, called National Trends+ (NT+), should reflect the latest updated NECPs, and with its two variants, acting as a stress test, are pointing to the future. How they are constructed is revealing of the current direction.
Input assumptions, data and the related methodology are key elements of the scenario-building process.
TYNDP Scenarios should allow learning with the scenarios, and also show potential trade-offs, and instead of merely adjusting to future changes, to ensure that infrastructure planning is forward-looking.
For a climate-resilient energy system, it is necessary to conceptualise the conditions under which future energy infrastructures are presumed to operate. In the future, modelling and simulating for a highly flexible, 100% renewable energy system should be integrated into the scenario framework, by considering short- and long-duration energy storage, alongside promoting open source approaches.
CAN Europe is a member of the Stakeholder Reference Group (SRG) to TYNDP Scenarios. SRG follows the evolution of the TYNDP scenarios and associated modelling.
TYNDP stands for Ten-Year Network Development Plan, a European infrastructure development plan prepared every two years by ENTSOG (for gas) and ENTSO-E (for electricity). It provides a long-term vision for the future power system, identifies necessary grid expansions, and promotes Project of Common Interest (PCI) development by supporting national plans and ensuring greater transparency in the EU transmission network.
