Local participation in the energy transition in Greece’s lignite regions In 2018 the Greek government enacted the law 4513/2018 establishing energy communities which offered local communities in lignite regions a tool for participating in the energy transformation. 140 energy communities are currently established in Greece’s lignite regions and they operate 38 renewables projects of total capacity 27,4MW. These energy communities are for-profit or non-profit schemes created by individuals, enterprises and/or local authorities. The citizens’ energy communities of Western Macedonia aiming to cover the energy needs of their members have created the coalition “ΟΦeΛΟΣ” and are active in the Just Transition process.
