TIPPING+ is a EU Horizon 2020 research project that brings together 17 international partners with the aim of advancing the scientific understanding of Social – Ecological Tipping Points (SETPs) to support successful transitions toward low-carbon and clean energies. It explores why and under which conditions regional systems highly dependent on coal, turn towards a clean energy and low carbon development, or, on the contrary, go on the opposite direction with all the derived negative implications.
Clean energy transitions in Coal and Carbon Intensive Regions (CCIR) are a priority for European and regional policies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The COVID pandemic has accelerated the necessity of undergoing deliberate deep transformations in socio-ecological systems. However, there is little knowledge about why, how and when abrupt and irreversible changes triggered by apparently small events occur in these regions.
In particular TIPPING+:
- Examine all Social – Ecological Tipping Points (SETPs) which support or prevent the transition toward a clean energy System in Coal and Carbon Intensive Regions.
- Identify tipping interventions through social, economic, cultural and environmental transformative policies.
- Evaluate the visions, narratives, roles and capacities of the different actors involved in the energy transition.
The project uses a transdisciplinary approach to undergo systematic and comparative analysis of SETPs in TIPPING+ case studies: twenty Coal and Carbon Intensive Regions around the World.
