Often misleadingly called “natural”, fossil gas is a fossil fuel energy source driving the climate and energy crises.

This factsheet unveils the story of fossil gas, highlighting its significant climate, social and energy security impacts, along with the “invisible” threat of methane emissions. It examines the European gas market, which is undergoing major transformations, and explores the effects of the Russian full scale invasion to Ukraine, leading the EU towards new dependencies on fossil gas, with new suppliers and increased LNG imports, exposing the EU’s  uncontrolled infrastructure boom.

CAN Europe advocates for phasing out gas by 2035 and proposes a concrete civil society plan and recommendations to boost the EU energy security in the upcoming 2024-2029 policy cycle.
