Poblado Dirigido de Orcasitas: How residents transformed their neighbourhood through collective action

Barcelona, Catalonia – Project led by La Borda

In the 1950s, rural migrants arriving in Madrid built around 1,500 homes on the city’s southern outskirts. There was no running water, no electricity and no paved roads. Built on clay and mud, Orcasitas became a neighbourhood shaped by collective effort from the very beginning. More than half a century later, residents faced new challenges, including poor housing conditions and energy poverty. Community organising once again played an important role in shaping the neighbourhood’s response.

Today, Orcasitas is recognised as one of Spain’s leading examples of citizen-led renovation. Heating bills have fallen by 80%, homes have become more comfortable and energy-efficient, and the neighbourhood is preparing for its next chapter through a collective solar energy project. Yet the story of Orcasitas is not primarily about buildings. It is a story about residents who came together to improve their neighbourhood and shape its future.
