The EU Platform for Coal Regions in Transition was launched by the European Commission in December last year to support Member States and regions as they shift away from coal towards renewable energy, in order to “leave no region behind”. The platform holds its first stakeholders meetings today and tomorrow in Brussels.
In reaction to the meeting today, Joanna Flisowska, coal policy coordinator at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, said: “The EU Platform for Coal Regions in Transition demonstrates that the European Commission finally acknowledged that there is no future for coal. The EU must now invest all available resources in the regions and communities most affected by the clean energy transition beyond coal.”
“The just transition away from coal must take us towards health and prosperity for workers, create opportunities for affected regions and sustainability for Europe.”
