REACTION: Europe can only control the energy produced within its borders

Europe can only control the energy produced within its borders

16th March 2026, Brussels – As Energy Ministers convened today in Brussels, fossil gas prices continue to soar across Europe due to the ongoing conflict in the middle east. It’s another stark lesson for EU leaders that energy security can never be guaranteed when Europe still relies on fossil fuel imports.

The most effective and permanent route to energy security is to replace fossil fuel imports with renewables, electrification and energy savings, shielding economies from geopolitical shocks and volatile global fuel markets. Of course, investing in grids, cross-border interconnections and energy flexibility will be crucial in achieving this, but will require a united approach from all EU Member States.

At the same time, it is important to recognise the burden this fossil fuels price crisis is having on households and businesses across Europe. Short-term measures are needed to ease pressure, but this can not come at the expense of the EU’s climate goals and energy transition.
