Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe is Europe’s largest coalition working on climate and energy issues. With over 180 member organisations in more than 38 European countries – representing over 44 million citizens – CAN Europe works to prevent dangerous climate change and promote sustainable climate and energy policy in Europe.  We’re currently seeking a committed and motivated individual to join CAN Europe’s management as Head of Climate. Besides a strong passion to lead our Network’s efforts to fight dangerous climate change and accelerate a socially just transformation, the ideal candidate should demonstrate experience in strategic leadership and organisational management and deep knowledge of EU climate policy. Leading the secretariat’s Climate Team, the individual will contribute to the work of the Management Team under the supervision of the Managing Director. The position is full-time with a strong preference for a candidate based in Brussels, with teleworking authorised.  Required skills and experiences: 
  • University degree or equivalent qualification preferably in Political sciences or Environmental Sciences 
  • At least 6 of relevant professional experience, of which at least 2 years in leadership roles; 
  • In-depth knowledge of EU institutions and processes, including practical experience of at least one policy process relating to EU or national climate policy and/or diplomacy; 
  • Strategic thinking and long-term vision; 
  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills; 
  • Excellent level of written and spoken English; 
  • Outstanding communication and networking skills; 
  • High level of motivation and ability to coordinate the achievement of complex objectives within deadlines. 
  • Ability to put in place practices and processes that enable the integration and convergence of a wide range of different objectives and positions. 
Other desirable qualities: 
  • Demonstrated alignment with the mission, the modes of action, and the values of CAN Europe; Experience of working with a network of NGOs in the climate and energy fields; Working knowledge of EU Climate Policy; 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate a diverse team and provide strategic guidance based on organisational values and towards common objectives. 
Job contents:  Strategic Guidance
  • Support the Directors in developing CAN Europe’s political strategies and priorities overall; 
  • Ensure strategic guidance and coordination of the climate policy work; Ensure linkages and cooperation between the climate team and the other CAN Europe’s policy teams, communication, network and admin teams; 
  • Manage and support relevant Policy Coordinators from the climate team; Contribute to develop policy positions and implement specific advocacy/campaign activities (as leader of the climate team). 
Organisational Management 
  • As a member of the Management Team, ensure effective operational and operational processes relating to the management of the secretariat (inter alia coordination and harmonization of objectives, plans and processes, guiding prioritising and de-prioritising of workstreams and improving internal communication); 
  • Line-manage staff members from Climate team; 
  • Support and advice strategic coordination of CAN Europe’s fundraising efforts;
  • Advice and assist the functioning of the CAN Europe secretariat’s budget. 
Representation 
  • High-level representation to (possible) funders (in cooperation with the Fundraising Coordinator and the Directors); 
  • Support the Director in CAN Europe’s representation towards CAN International, the Green10 and similar NGO coordination initiatives; 
  • Participation in meetings with decision-makers, join panels, act as spokesperson, where needed, and related to the relevant policy team as indicated above; 
  • Engage in representation and coordination towards the network’s members. 
With this opportunity, we offer:  An open-ended contract with flexible working hours and the possibility of teleworking.  This position is preferably based in Brussels but it is also open to applicants from the European Union or those already in possession of a residence and a work permit. We are not considering sponsoring visas this time.  Remuneration is based on our Belgian salary grid and adapted to the cost of living on location.  If the position is based at our head office in Brussels, we will offer a Belgian open-ended contract with an expected salary of between 4.200,00 € and 4.950,00 € gross/month depending on the relevant years of experience (from 6 to 9 years) and subject to Belgian tax; Meal vouchers (7,00 €/day); transport costs; eco-vouchers (250,00 €/year); sport and culture vouchers (100,00 €/year), phone allowance (39,00 €/month); work computer.  In other cases, it will be a consultancy contract or an employment contract, depending on opportunities on location, with a remuneration based on our Belgian salary grid, adapted to the local cost of living.
