Letter: Safeguarding the Integrity of the EU Methane Regulation – Do Not Weaken Import Rules

Letters

An alliance of 24 civil society organisations has sent a letter to the European Commission and Energy Ministers calling for the safeguarding of the integrity of the EU Methane Regulation (EUMR), raising concerns about attempts to weaken the Regulation’s import rules. The letter was sent following the EU Energy Council, where Member States discussed “pragmatic” implementation for fossil fuel importers amid growing pressure from industry and the US administration to exempt its fossil gas exports from EU methane rules. The signatories stress that any delay in the implementation of the EUMR, or any weakening of the rules on imports, is neither necessary nor justified and would only undermine the Regulation’s effectiveness. At a time when global methane emissions remain alarmingly high, any compromise on these rules would lock in high-emissions LNG for years and jeopardise the EU’s climate commitments.
