New Boom and Bust Coal report highlights Türkiye’s energy transition crossroads

Reports & Briefs

The latest edition of the Boom and Bust Coal report by Global Energy Monitor highlights the continued global slowdown of coal power expansion, while underlining that important challenges remain in countries such as Türkiye.

CAN Europe contributed analysis to the Türkiye chapter of the report, which examines the contrast between growing local momentum for a just energy transition and continued political support for coal production.

The report notes that Türkiye’s pipeline of proposed coal plants has significantly declined over the past decade, while civil society and local actors continue to push for cleaner and fairer energy pathways. At the same time, concerns remain over ongoing coal subsidies, environmental impacts, and the absence of a national coal phaseout plan.

As Türkiye prepares to host COP31, the report highlights a key opportunity to accelerate renewable energy deployment and support a just transition for coal-dependent regions and workers.
