Methane released throughout fossil fuel operations accounts for nearly one-third of methane emissions from human activity today. While accelerating the climate crisis, wasted methane also represents a major energy security opportunity if the leaks are stopped.
As Europe faces its second fossil fuel crisis in three years, with the US war on Iran adding pressure on supply markets, methane management is a key measure to recover wasted gas while paving the way for reduced gas demand.
Drawing from CAN Europe’s policy brief, “Methane mitigation for EU energy security: an analysis of supplier risks and abatement potential”, this factsheet visualises the quantity and origin of the wasted gas that could be recovered, as well as the cost of methane abatement measures across the EU’s main gas suppliers.
The factsheet also sets out key policy recommendations for the EU, including phasing out US LNG by 2032 and integrating the EU Methane Regulation into a comprehensive strategy to phase out fossil gas by 2035.
