In the EU-China Summit outcome statement, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and recognised the UN Secretary General’s Summit on September 2019 as an important milestone for ramping up climate action.
Commenting on the joint statement, Wendel Trio, Director of Climate Action Network Europe (CAN) Europe said:
“The EU-China statement that both countries will work together for a successful outcome of the September UN Climate Action Summit is promising. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has set a clear benchmark for the success of that meeting: the countries need to come with clear indications of the additional actions they plan to do to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C.
We are looking forward to the EU and China developing and agreeing on such additional actions. EU Heads of State and Government will need to use the coming months to both agree on substantially increasing the EU’s 2030 target as well as on reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the next few decades.”
