September 30, 2026 – The Build Better Lives campaign, together with the European Environmental Bureau (EEB), ECOS, Habitat for Humanity, Habitat for Humanity Romania, Habitat for Humanity Poland and ECODES, submitted a joint response to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on the Housing Simplification Package.
The Commission’s consultation, open until 30 September 2026, seeks evidence on how EU legislation and its implementation affect housing supply and affordability, as well as opportunities for targeted regulatory simplification.
First and foremost, simplification should not come at the expense of health, environmental, energy-efficiency or social standards that ensure essential societal well-being. Instead, the Housing Simplification Package should take a comprehensive approach that addresses the multiple drivers of Europe’s housing crisis while supporting the smart implementation of current legislation to ensure healthy, affordable and sustainable homes.Our response also highlights that simplification can support housing affordability and availability when it removes unnecessary barriers to renovation, adaptive reuse and the better use of existing housing stock.
